HARDI Urges ENERGY STAR to Reconsider Proposed Changes to Programmable Thermostat Program

HARDI filed these comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program regarding the latest draft of proposed specifications for the next level of ENERGY STAR programmable thermostats. ENERGY STAR announced earlier this year its intent to suspend the label for programmable thermostats at the conclusion of 2009. HARDI and others in a coalition led by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) were successful in convincing ENERGY STAR to reconsider this suspension, however ENERGY STAR’s EPA staff then issued proposed specifications for the next generation of labeled thermostats that effectively disqualified every readily available product now and for at least the next 18 months. HARDI and its partners are working to get the specifications changed so there would be no interruption in the availability of ENERGY STAR labeled programmable thermostat.
